Animal Planet Chapter Book on Snakes

I may have mentioned over a million times by now how much my son loves anything and everything to do with animals.  He loves playing games with animals, reading books about them and watching all kinds of documentaries on them.  So when I heard about the Animal Planet chapter books I knew they would be perfect for my little man.

We have two of the four books – Snakes! (Animal Planet Chapter Books) and Bugs! (Animal Planet Chapter Books). (The other two are on Sharks and Dinosaurs)

Animal Planet Chapter Books Bugs and Snakes. Non-fiction chapter books for young readers

My son finds snakes fascinating but I must be honest I am petrified of snakes and as a result I never watch anything about them or read anything on them (seriously they SCARE me).  But I also know that the best way to encourage him to read more is to give him books on topics that interest him.  So our very first snake book………….

Animal Planet Chapter Book Snakes. Lots of information about snakes and great pictures

This book is 107 pages long. It includes lots of pictures with labels and captions on them and is fill of facts (and yes even I will admit they are fascinating facts) about snakes. It starts off by explaining the body of a snake and what makes a snake a snake – including a great picture of a snake skeleton.

It talks about the different ways a snake can move (really did not know there were so many ways), how snakes attack and defend themselves (hmmm, not sure I needed to know this), what they like to eat for dinner (and no this did not include nibbling on poeple).

Animal Planet Chapter Book Snakes. Great chapter books for kids you are interested in animals

There is also a whole chapter on Rattlesnakes and one on Boas and Pythons (my son loved this).  The life cycle of a snake and its sense which actually work differently to that of a human. And finally the weird snakes of the world and the superdeadly ones (just to mention this book is written from an American angle so there is an emphasis on American snakes).

The pages are not glossy pages but that did not bother my son.  My son loved this book because it is filled with facts about snakes and written in a way that allowed him to read most of it to himself (the text in the book is slightly larger than normal which is actually perfect for newer chapter readers like my son).  It is a great book for any child who is interested in snakes (although if you are as scared of snakes as I am, I would suggest you don’t read it at night).

Multiple Representation Dice

I love Maths manipulatives.  My kids tend to understand their Maths better if they can hold objects in their hands and move items around.  And I have found with my son he will sit for longer and do more Maths if it is activity based instead of a worksheet.  So when I was told about the Multiple Representation Dice from Learning Resources I was very curious as to how they would work.

The set consists of 16 foam dice and it covers numbers from zero to twenty.  For each number there are four representations – the number itself, small blocks, tally marks and circles set out in a grid (10 – frame).

Immediate first impression – my son liked the feeling of the foam dice and the size was perfect for his hands (5cm x 5cm x 5cm).

Multiple Representation Dice by Learning Resources. Foam dice that visually represent numbers to 20

He immediately started sorting the dice and matching the different views for each number.

Learning Resources multiple respresentation foam dice. Numbers from 0 to 20

By just trying to match the numbers to the visual representation he was doing lots of addition with 5’s and 10’s.  And the more he matched the quicker he got.  The more the kids play with these dice the quicker they become at recognising basic patterns like 3 fives plus 2 = 17.  I LOVE this about the dice.  As they become more and more familiar with these basic numbers and what makes up these numbers.

But you can use these Dice for so many other activities (just think Dice games and why use number dice when the kids could play the game with the tally mark dice instead ?).

We played a game where my son would choose two dice (any two dice not just the ones with the numbers on) and he would throw them and then create a sum and work out the answer. The sums were totally random some were easy and some were harder.

Using Multiple Representation foam dice from Learning Resources to create sums

And the reason I LOVE this type of activity – is the simple fact that he sat for ages throwing the dice and creating sum after sum.  He got to the point where after he threw the dice if the sum was too easy he would just say – “No too easy, going to throw again”.

And my daughter also joined in – she took it up a level and created some sums using four or more dice and even created some sums with brackets (she LOVES putting brackets into her sums).

Using more than two dice to create longer sums

And it does not only have to be addition, we also did some multiplication with the dice and we combined addition and multiplication – the first two dice needed to be added together and then the answer of that is multiplied by the third dice.

I Love this set of dice.  I think the more the kids play with the dice and become more and more comfortable with the different ways the numbers are represented and the way we can build up our numbers use 5’s and 10’s the more confident they will get with basic maths sums.

My son has already added this set to our new Maths Basket.  (I am aiming on getting a post about the March / April Maths Basket out within the next week – running a bit late as we have had some bugs – but in case you missed our other ones this is the original maths Basket that started the whole craze).

Learning Resources kindly sent me the Representation Dice together with a few other goodies for my kids to test out.  The fact that they sent us the Dice in no way affected our thoughts on the product.  We are big Learning Resources fans and I often buy their products for my kids to use.

Mrs Mactivity Spring Fun

I love themed activities.  It just seems to add some fun to out learning activities, especially Maths activities that the kids need to practice.  Last week I spotted that the new Mrs Mactivity site had some Easter Egg Number Bonds, but they were for number bonds to 10, they looked so cute but we have covered those.  And then when I was on their site looking for some spring themed colouring items (see at the end of the post) I spotted that they had also created some Eggs for Number Bonds to 20, so I quickly downloaded those, printed them on card and we started cutting the eggs out.

Although the Number Bond activity was for my youngest the kids thought the eggs looked better coloured in so both of them got to work (there are quite a few eggs to colour in so it helped that big sister joined in – plus she had just gotten some new sharpies and whenever new stationary arrives it needs to be used immediately).

The idea is that the kids needs match the two halves of the eggs together to make up 20.

Free to download Egg Number Bond activity to 20 from the Mrs Mactivity website

Straight forward activity but a fun way to practice some number bonds (until I started our home ed journey I never realized how knowing number bonds was such a good basic stepping stone for kids maths – so now we practice and practice them but we try to keep it fun and vary the activities).

Number Bond to 20 maths activity. Spring or Easter themed. match the two halves of the egg to get 20

It was actually a great activity because he kept pointing out how sums like 13+7 where similar to 17+3 that you just “flipped the numbers around” – his words.  After he had matched all the eggs he went around and pointed out all the different number patterns that he could find.  And because we have been practicing spelling some number words I suggested he write out labels and see how many eggs he could label (with the correct words).

matching the correct number word to the egg half underneath the card (the two halves added together must come to 20)

Adding number words to the number bond matching egg activity from the Mrs Mactivity site

I am really happy with how this Number Bond egg matching activity turned out – the kids did excellent colouring, my son practiced his number bonds, noticed some patterns in the sums and practiced spelling his number words.

And if you are looking for a fun Spring themed colouring activity  Flower wreaths are very popular with my daughter.  They have three different designs on the website.

My daughter even managed to get her brother to do one – although he did comment that he does not understand why no-one makes colouring wreaths with animals on them (he thinks everything should come with some sort of animal included).

The Mrs Mactivity website is a fairly new website that has educational and craft pages and activities to download.

Tutankhamun Book and Art

Along with our Egyptian workshop and outings to see Egyptian artifacts we have also been reading some Egyptian books and doing a few Egyptian pages from Activity Village.

BIG CAT reader Discovering Tutankhamun's Tomb by Juliet Kerrigan

One of my daughter’s favourite Egyptian themed book has been the book Discovering Tutankhamun’s Tomb: Band 15/Emerald (Collins Big Cat).  My daughter found reading this book to herself more manageable than some of the other Egyptian books that we took out of our local library.  It is part of the BIG CAT reading series and is on their Emerald band so aimed at more Upper Key stage 2 ages.  There are some challenging words in it and the glossary at the book does come in handy but it just seems to flow more easily than some of the other books.

It starts off by introducing the Ancient Egyptians and explaining a bit about mummification, the tombs and the Valley of the Kings.  Then it goes onto who Tutankhamun was and how the tomb was discovered.

BIG CAT reader Discovering Tutankhamun's Tomb includes an explaination about the mummification process

It explains the layout of the tomb and goes into a fair bit of detail about what was discovered inside the tomb and what the discoveries tell us about Ancient Egyptian life (it talks about how the clothing they wore, games they played, food they ate). So although it comes from the angle of what was in his tomb it ends up explaining a fair bit about the Ancient Egyptians.

I liked this book as it was informative and it was one of the few Egyptian books that my daughter was happy to read to herself (and to her younger brother).  Also the pictures included in the book are a very high quality which enabled my daughter to use them for some drawing activities.

Discovering Tutankhamun's Tomb a stunning reader which has clear photos of the artefacts

When she coloured in her Tutankhamun picture (below) she actually used one of the pictures in this book (above) to copy the details and get her colours just right. (She used a colouring pages from Activity Village – Tutankhamun page.)

With all the Egyptian reading that we have been doing I thought it would be good to make sure the kids understood where everything in Egypt was located.  We downloaded this great black and white map of Ancient Egypt from Activity Village (the colouring in was added by one of my kids).

And we also found some great Egyptian colouring pages / templates for the kids to use.

The Design a Death Mask. is a great template which allows the kids to add their own details.

and Activity Village also have a Sarcophagus page and the Canopic Jars page

And of course we did not just stick to realistic versions of the Ancient Egyptians, the kids did also get a bit creative and add some extra colour just for fun.

Egyptian Workshop and Hieroglyphs

At the beginning of the year I booked the kids into two history workshops at the British Museum.  We went to our first workshop this week and it was brilliant.  I honestly had no idea what to expect but at only £2 a kid I thought it was worth a try.  The presenter was friendly and chatted to the kids, answering all their questions, even when the kids went on a bit of a tangent.  She had set up a lovely short talk, with maps and pictures, she engaged the kids with an activity and even had them posing in front of a green screen so they could create their own version of a tomb painting.  I was really impressed that the British museum have created workshops for Home educated kids and that they clearly went to a lot of effort to make it informative and engaging.

Since we were at the museum for the workshop the kids and I also walked around the Egyptian section.  We have been before but their Egyptian rooms are really worth a visit and it was nice going back the second time as now we knew a bit more about the mummification process and hieroglyphs.

British Museum, Egyptian Display an example of Egyptian painting and hieroglyphs

I knew we were going to be out for a long day and that it would probably be busy and noisy so I made sure I had an activity packed in my bag.  One of the things I have learnt is when we are out in a busy, noisy environment it helps to give the kids a break and let them focus on something else.  We found a nice quite corner in the museum and both kids had a go at writing in hieroglyphs.

Practicing writing hieroglyphs while visiting the British Museum

Both of my kids love the idea of writing in code or in different languages so I knew something like this would be a welcome break for them.  I downloaded the Egyptian Hieroglyphs page from Twinkl (it is part of their paid for Classic package) but they also have a FREE version – Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs.

Egyptian Hieroglyphs. Fun Egyptian activity for young kids to do when they are learning about Ancient Egypt

The Hieroglyphs was such a hit with my two that they have been writing out more words and phrases at home and I now have a few scrolls with hieroglyphs on them (yes scrolls – my youngest insists that if you write anything in an Ancient format it MUST be in a scroll format).

My kids also liked the Ancient Egyptian fact posters (Twinkl Classic).  They are a nice summary of key events and facts.

Both the kids and I are already looking forward to our next British Museum workshop and history theme – Ancient Greece (I will write a another post on our favourite Egyptian book before we get into the Greece activities).
