Number learning activities

My little boy is number mad at the moment so I thought I would put together a summary of some of the number activities that we have been doing.

Hopscotch numbers.

Blue loves using the Hopscotch mat – he will get me to shout out a number and then he will either jump onto the number or he will throw his beanbag on the number (we have also driven our cars onto the correct number).

Our Number sensory tub.

This tub is probably the second favourite tub of all time (the number one favourite seems to be the bean tub).  Blue loves digging in the beads and buttons for the numbers.  He often gets Lightning or  Mater to join in.  Pink also still loves this tub.  She still loves using the tub for her Maths.  She often writes out sums and then digs in the tub to find the correct answer. (This tub can also be used with letters we used it a lot when we where learning our sounds).

Our number peg cards.

Pink loves being given cards as part of her “school work” so Blue started asking for his own cards.  These are now his Maths cards.  So when big sister is doing Maths with me he will often sit with these peg cards (Free on Twinkl) and finish the whole tub.

Number line

I wrote the numbers on some lolly sticks and then Blue got to place them in order in his play dough.

Our Number Book

Love this number book  (free from PreK pages). Great for getting the kids to practice writing their numbers.  Blue really liked doing the stickers on each page.

Making our own number sticks

The kids love these.  A while ago we made our  very own number sticks using some wooden numbers that we bought from Tesco, our lolly sticks and some stickers.  These nunber sticks are so simple to make yet the kids really seem to love them.  I think they are really proud of the fact that they made the number sticks themselves.

Our Number train

Blue is train and car mad so no big surprise this number train (FREE from Twinkl) has been a huge hit with out little man

Scaredy Cat by Orchard Toys

This is our latest game from Orchard Toys and the kids love it.  They love building the scarecrow and I often hear squeals coming from the lounge when one of them gets a cat.  This game has been great for encouraging Blue to count past 20.

If you have any other suggestions please do share I love hearing new ways to make numbers and Maths fun for the kids.

Owls

After a recent trip to the local library both kids chose Owl books.  Pink actually choose Owl Babies to be one of her readers and Blue choose The Owl who was afraid of the dark.  Both are lovely children’s books and both have been very popular the past few weeks.  So popular that we ended up doing some extra Owl work around the books.

We first got out our Usborne beginners Owl book.  We have lots of these Usborne beginner books and so far every single book that we have bought in the series has been a huge hit with both kids.  Both the kids already know quite a bit about Owls as we did speak about Owls in some detail when we looked at Nocturnal animals.  But there is always something new to learn (like owls being Raptors).

We downloaded the Owl lapbook from Homeschool Share and we started making our very own Owl poster.

Owl posterPink had a great time cutting and pasting and chatted away while she worked.  (Always a good sign that she is enjoying her project).

She was actually a bit sad once it was finished she asked if we could make another one.

We also thought that after all our talking and reading about Owls we would try to make our very own Owl Baby.  We recently received some lovely little pine cones from Crafty Crocodiles  so we thought we would try an idea that we have seen in a number of different places on Pinterest.  We stuffed the pine cones with cotton wool and then we stuck some googly eggs on.

We also made a beak from an old bit of egg carton and used some pipe cleaners to make some wings.

owl babyPink loved this and she is slowly working on making a whole nest full of these baby owls.

We also love the look of these  Cork Owls at Happy Hooligans.  Definitely something we will be trying one of these days.

Pumpkin Maths !!

We have never been big on Halloween.  As a kid we never did anything for it and my eldest is not keen on anything slightly scary but my little boy is a different story.  He loves all the creepy crawlies and don’t get me started on the eyeball sweets – he thinks they are the coolest (his words).

Hence the new counting tubs.

The first one is actually Blues creepy crawly tub (green shredded paper with his new spiders, centipedes and beetles)

creepy crawliesand I just added some of the pumpkin number cards from 3 Dinosaurs.

pumpkins

I set out the number cards on the table and then he had to hunt for the pumpkin with the correct dots on it.  I guessed Pink would want to join in so I hide the number word cards in the tub  for her and she had to find those.

pumkin number cards

The second was some of our black beans with some pumpkin and eyeball chocolates and 2 empty egg cartoons.

Halloween

The idea being that Blue could practice using the tweezers to put the eyeballs into the egg cartoon and Pink could practice her counting in 2’s by placing 2 mini chocolates (1 pumpkin and 1 eyeball) into each egg cartoon.  And she completed the counting in 2’s page which is part of the 3 Dinosaur Pumpking pack Maths update pack (see link below).  This really was a fun way to revise her counting in 2’s (need to think of something similar for her counting in 5’s revision).

Pumpkin counting in 2'sAnd lastly, Pink saw the Pumpkin addition cards and asked to do them.  She knows all of these sums already but I will never say no to one of the kids asking to practice some Maths.  So after cutting up the 3 part cards (again from the Pumpkin pack) I set out the addition cards on her table and hide the number portion in a small denim bag.

Pumpkin addition

She had to reach into the bag to get the numbers out and then match the numbers to the sum.

If you are wanting some fun pumpkin themed Maths pages be sure to have a look on the 3 Dinosaurs website – all the pumpkin maths cards and pages I used above are from 3 Dinosaurs – Pumpkin Pack Maths Update

Encouraging my little book worm with Autumn words

My little girl has always loved books, she has always loved story time and would often just sit and page through her books and make up her own story to go with them.  But the last few weeks her reading has just taken off.  She is now taking her old story books off the bookshelf and reading them too herself.  She is now a real book-worm (she is very proud of this fact and tells me  this on a regular basis).  And big bonus for me, big sister is loving reading stories to her brother (maybe now I will not always end up with cold half-finished cups of tea).

I really want to do everything I can to encourage this.  Naturally as she starts reading harder and harder books some of the vocab gets a bit hard for her and I do have to help with some of the words.  Madam does not like this.  She wants to be able to read her books by herself.  So I am trying to really work on her vocab, on recognising words, on understanding what they mean and yes even on spelling and writing them.  And yes this does mean that some of our planned “school activities” have been pushed aside for us to spend more time on this.  But I really want to work with this momentum and encourage my new book-worm.  As I always say I do Pencil planning !!!

To help with her vocab we have been making lots of word pictures (not sure what to call them).  We normally choose a theme and I often draw something like a cupcake or an apple tree and then she writes words inside the picture or sometimes sticks the words on the picture.  Pink loves this.  Once we have completed the picture it gets hung up on one of her learning boards.  This last week we did some autumn words.

autumn wordsI included the autumn word mat from Twinkl (part of the FREE downloads that you can get).  We have actually printed off a number of their word mats lately and Pink has been using them a lot when she writes.  I find that having the word mats to refer to means she is not asking me for as much help with her spelling, she first has a look at the word mats to see if she can find the word that she is battling to spell (getting closer to finishing a cup of tea before it gets cold).

With this tree I cut out some basic leaf shapes in autumn colours and the Pink wrote words on the leaves that described autumn.

autumn word tree

I was busy baking in the kitchen when she did this one so I was very impressed with the end result.  She found that some of the words did not fit onto the leaves so she just wrote the words directly onto the paper (we had a very loud thunder-storm the previous day hence some of the words added to the tree).

Creating an Autumn Word Tree at home

She has already requested that we do more word pictures – she wants to do one about the witch on Room on the Broom and one about the farm where we go and pick vegetables. So more pencil planning for next week, more changing our planned word to encourage our little book-worm and her love for bigger words.

Room on the Broom and rhyming words

Over the weekend we happened to end up in a lovely toy store which had a big display of Room on the Broom books and toys.  My kids love the story and naturally loved looking at all the toys on display and no big surprise when we got home our copy of the book was quickly found and re-read and re-read and re-read some more.

Pink and Blue are always randomly telling me which 2 words rhyme and Pink is starting to use that to help her spell eg she will say dream rhymes with cream so cream ends with eam.  I really want to encourage this thinking as my spelling is shocking and I love the fact that she figured this out for herself.

I started off looking for rhyming cards but then I found these editable Room on the Broom pages on Twinkl (gold) and thought we could make the cards ourselves.  We printed out the pages, laminated and cut them into cards ourselves.  Then I used on of our whiteboard markers to write a word one of the cards and left a matching card empty.

Room on the Broom cards

Pink then had to read the word on the card, think of a rhyming word and write it out herself.

Room on the Broom rhyming

I was so happy with how this turned out as it was not something we that planned on doing but rather a quick spur of the moment idea.
