Making a Brown Bear Brown Bear mini-book

Both my kids loved the Eric Carle book “Brown Bear Brown Bear what do you see ” when they where a bit younger.  So when I saw these lovely stick puppets (Free to download from Twinkl) I knew they would be a hit in our house and I thought it might be fun if we used them to make our own version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear.

We started off by colouring in the black and white version but we did not stick to the colours in the book we choose our own colours.

The Brown Bear Brown Bear black and white stick puppets downloaded from Twinkl and coloured in by the kids

Then we cut out the brightly coloured animals and stuck them into our little book.  We just folded some plain white card and drew the lines ourselves (the lines were not even all the same width as the kids had a go at using the rulers but it was great practice for them).

Then my daughter started writing out her sentences for her book (she addapted them to the colours that she used for the different animals – so Brown Bear became Pink Bear).  I have never seen her this excited to practice her writing.

Not only did she practice her writing and her spelling but we talked about using capital letters (she likes to insert capital letters in the middle of her sentences) and when to use a verses an (still something she gets confused by).  And the best part was afterwards she was so proud of her little book.

I love the way this turned out.  It was so easy to set up and my daughter really loved creating her own mini-version of the book.  We are definately going to make a few more of these mini-books in the future.

Cut-out Heart card

We love making cards in our house.  It started off as an activity to encourage my daughter to write and now it is one of our favourite art activities.

We started this card by tracing around a large heart template and then cutting it out.  Once you have the basic shape you need to cut out an inner heart .  We did ours by starting at the bottom of the heart

heart card 1

Cut all the way around but make sure you leave a bit at the bottom still attached

heart card 2This allows the inner heart to fold out making the card.

You then need to glue the outside heart onto another piece of paper so that you have something to write your message onto (make sure the inner heart is not glued).  Once you have glued it down cut around the heart shape (the photos below should help show what I mean).

The outside of the card looks like this

Heart card with stickersWhen you open up the card, you can write a message on the white bit.

Here is one that my daughter made for her dad.

The inner heart where she wrote “daddy” folds out and on the inside you can write your message.  (the white paper or card is glued onto the red paper or card).

It ends up being a such a cute card.

If you missed the post a few weeks ago you could also try and make our tissue paper heart cards

Afrikaans Lapbook

My little boy’s Afrikaans has really come along in leaps and bounds lately (he is not as fluent as big sister) so I wanted to keep the momentum going and thought the kids and I would try to make our very own Afrikaans lapbook.

I have never found is easy to find Afrikaans pages on the internet (if they are all hiding in some place and you know where that is please let me know).  So I have made a few basic pages myself and after spending ages trying to find nice images to use I realised that I could use some of the editable resources on Twinkl.

Afrikaans lapbook

My kids love anything animal related to I downloaded the editable African animal word mat from Twinkl and typed in the Afrikaans names for the kids (I believe Twinkl are going to be uploading the Afrikaans version when they do I will include the link).  They both wanted the word mat to go in the center of their lapbook.

I also downloaded the baby farm animals and their mothers cards from Twinkl and added the Afrikaans names (part of gold package).

I then dug out some of the Afrikaans cards that I made for my daughter last year and added those to.

I included the Afrikaans / English number matching cards and the Afrikaans / English colour cards (they are very basic but I am including the documents below the pictures).

For the days of the week I included the truck cards that I made.

On the back of the lapbook we stuck down our map of the world from Twinkl.  We used our Afrikaans label the world cards with these

Only problem is now big sister wants her own Afrikaans lapbook so more cards to try and make /find / edit.

Matching stars maths activity

We love sensory tubs and I have learnt with my daughter that she enjoys it when I mix a sensory tub idea with some of her learning cards.  So I printed off these lovely stars matching cards from Twinkl (Platinum).  The idea being that the kids need to match the card with the sum on it to the correct star (which has the answer on it).

Star matching tub

I added the black beans as my daughter loves the feeling of submerging her hands in these beans and finds it relaxing (always good to add a relaxing element when we are doing Maths).  We focused on the sums for the numbers between 11 and 20.

star matching activity

In the pack that you download, the lovely people at Twinkl have included a number of different sums.  I sorted through the cards and only choose the ones that I wanted as I did not want her to get too overwhelmed.  We will retry the same tub later on it the week and I will change the sum cards that we use.

And no big surprise but little man could not resist coming to join in.

He then used the star cards to practice his own counting

stars numbersAfter my daughter had finished her sums she decided to write them out on paper and then asked if she could type some different sums on a word document on the computer (she moved onto writing out some doubling sums).

What a great way to practice or Maths !!!

Kids Dragon making

We have been making some dragons the last few days.  Some of the results may not look 100 % like dragons but the kids had a blast and after all that is the most important thing.

My favourite dragon is this one made from cupcake cases and a pipe cleaner.  So simple yet I love the movement that the cupcake cases give the dragon.  We made holes in the center of each cupcake case

and then threaded a pipe cleaner through, added some eyes and a very bright cheerful friendly dragon was born

dragon 2A child friendly way of making the holes in the cupcake cases is to place the cupcake case on some blu tack and then get the kids to put a pencil through the cupcake case into the blu tack.

Little man loves his wooden spools so he naturally wanted to use them to try to make his own dragon.

dragon egg carton 1 And with some feathers added (my little girl’s new craze is to add these feathers to everything).

And another egg carton dragon creation but this time with some jewels added and little man did not thread the pip cleaner in this one he glued everything to the pipe cleaner instead (I personally think the threading works better but he likes this).

All creations featured above are made by the kids I just helped my youngest with some of the cutting.
