Letter matching with our Hama Beads

We love our Hama Beads.  I think they are a great activity for developing little hands and my daughter says they are a lovely “calming activity”.  My son likes the patterns, and enjoys the challenge of copying the pictures.

I bought the Hama Bead letter pegboard  (affiliate link) for my daughter around 2 year ago when she was struggling with her letter formation.  I thought it might help her to make the letters with the pegs, not sure if it did or not, we did lots of those type activities so I honestly can not say which ones worked.  But she did the letter peg board a number of times and enjoyed using it.

Lately my son has been working on his letter formation, unlike his sister (she learnt her lower case letters first and then his upper case letters) my little man is determined to learn both lower case and upper case letters at the same time.  I think it is being around his older sister he naturally is aware of what she is doing and wants to join in and he can be very determined when he wants to and will often attempt to teach himself.

So I thought it might be fun to use the Hama Beads in an Upper case / Lower case letter matching activity.

Hama Bead letter pegboard - making our Upper case letters

We used our pegboard to make the Upper case letters (both kids helped), I ironed them and hid them in our rainbow rice tub.  I also wrote out all the letters of the alphabet on a large piece of paper (all lower case).  Little man had to search in the rice for the letters and then match the upper case Hama letter to his lower case letter on the piece of paper.

Hama Bead letter search in rainbow rice

This served as a double activity for him – he was practicing matching his upper case letters to his lower case letters and he was also “working on his tactile defensiveness”.

Our rainbow rice is made by adding some rice, food colouring and some vinegar into a zip lock bag and then giving it a good shake (kids do this for me).  Once all the rice is covered we pour our rice onto trays and let it dry overnight.  Easy, and we have never had an issue with the colour coming off onto the kids hands.  The amount of food colouring that you need to add depends on how bright you want the colour to be (just a note the UK food colouring does not produce the same bright colours as the American food colouring).

Free Twinkl Playdough Mats

I have written a few posts on the free Twinkl pages that the kids use and I know a number of parents have found these helpful so today I am doing one on the Twinkl playdough mats.  They have a large range of playdough mats and the mats are split between their different packages – free, gold, platinum.  If you have never used the Twinkl free pages before all you need to do is register a free account and you will be able to download their free pages.

So ALL the links in today’s post will all be for FREE Twinkl playdough mats (there are a lot more free mats on their website but these are the ones that we have been using).  Hopefully a few readers will find a couple of useful links.

Free Gruffalo playdough mats from Twinkl

The Gruffalo playdough mats are probably one of my son’s favourites (Adjustment – I have been informed that Twinkl have been asked to remove all Gruffalo resources).  He loves the characters in the story and always has fun creating his own versions.  We use our Gruffalo mats inside our Learning Resources Write and Wipe pockets.

And I think his second favourite set are the transport set.  I started using these with him last year when I wanted to distract him so I could do reading with his sister and he still enjoys  doing these ones.

My daughter likes using the playdough mats with her STABILO 3-in-1  pencils. (They wipe off laminated sheets and the Learning Resources Write and Wipe pockets).  She uses them on her Division playdough mats all the time.

And she is trying to get her brother to use them on his number word playdough mats.

The kids also really like the African animal set and the Dinosaur set.  Both kids seem to use their pencils on these two sets, not sure why but some playdough mats get used almost exclusively with their pencils.

Our newest batch of playdough mats which I recently downloaded are these Castle ones.  The kids have been reading a number of castle related books lately so I have a feeling that they might enjoy having a go at these.

If you have kids who love Minibeast they have a lovely free Minibest set and they also have this earthworm set on longest and shortest (on my list to print next week once I get more ink).

The Learning Resources Write and Wipe pockets that we use are here – Write and wipe pockets.   And the the STABILO 3-in-1 pencils which we use on our laminating sleeves and on our Write and wipe pockets are here – STABILO 3-in-1.  (both affiliate links).

And you might be interested in a post I did last year on some of the free Christmas pages from Twinkl.

Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs

We have been doing a bunch of activities on Verbs, Nouns and Adjectives lately.  Nothing complicated, just sorting words into different categories and talking about why the words are in the different categories.  And as always I like to do a number of activities on the subject to make sure my daughter is understanding everything.  I recently did a small post on our home-made Verb and Noun folder, my daughter enjoyed it so we expanded a bit on that idea and made a similar one using the lovely Star words from Twinkl.

I downloaded the Verb, Adverb, Noun and Adjective sorting activity (platinum) and we have been using their huge collection of words to practice sorting into categories.  We started off by just revising our Nouns and Verbs.

Verbs and nouns sorting the starsMy daughter managed this really nicely, she keeps telling herself  “Verbs are action words”  that seems to help her.  She liked the idea of sticking the words down and making her own folder and you can never have enough folders (well that appears to be our new home motto at the moment). We used the A4 headings which are part of a Twinkl display banner pack (platinum).

Verbs and Nouns stars from twinklWe did each one on a piece of A4 card and then stuck the two together to make a little folder.

Verb and noun folder using the stars from TwinklWe have a lovely children’s book called Dangerous! (affiliate link).  It is a great book to read while the kids are learning about Nouns and Adjectives as it contains lots of fun examples.  It is a story about a mole who likes to label things (Nouns) and then one day the mole stumbles onto somthing and he is not sure what the object is, so he starts to label it in an attempt to figure out what the objects is ( lots of great adjectives are used).  My kids love it and it really explained adjectives in a way that both my kids understood, even my youngest.

Dangerous by Tim WarnesSo after re-reading this book together and talking about moles different labels my daughter had a go at doing an Adjectives page for her folder.

Verbs Nouns and AdjectivesAnd although I was not planning on introducing Adverbs just yet she asked – ” If Adjectives are the words that describe nouns what are words called that describe Verbs ?”  So we had a look at some Adverbs also.

I really like the way this turned out and big bonus for us is that it is very easy to pack away and take it out when we want to revisit the concepts again.

Dangerous book is a fun way of helping kids learn about Nouns and adjectives. Great illustrations and lots of fun examples

Simple Verb and Noun Sticking activity

I mentioned in an earlier post that we have been working on a number of different things all at the same time (totally driven by the rascals constant questions).  One of these “themes” if I can call it that has been Verbs and Nouns.  My daughter has become very interested in classifying her words into groups.  We have done a few activities on this so here is our  “home-made” one.  Nothing but card, scissors, glue, some old magazines oh and some pencil crayons for the headings.

We used one of the folders that we have in the house (just cut the sides to open it up), but you could also use two pieces of A4 card and just tape them together and the headings – nouns and verbs were made by my daughter.  Earlier on in the week we spent a session just paging through old magazines (also those advertising goodies that you get in the post are great for this), cutting out words which we thought could be either Nouns or Verbs.

Then my daughter stuck the words that we had cut out under either Verbs or Nouns.  We had a few discussions about some of the words eg LIFT – could that be – “I lift my bear up” or ” lets use the lift in the shop”.  Ans Sea was a great one – we chatted about how Sea and see is different.

Making our Verb and Noune folder

We only used the inside of our folder as we are planning on doing the same to the outside for Adverbs and Adjectives at a later date.

Simple, cheap but for my daughter a useful exercise in the differences of Verbs and Nouns.

We have a similar activity that we did using some Twinkl pages which I will share tomorrow.

Update – As I am always been asked what folders we use when we make our learning aids I thought I would update the post  for UK based readers – Foolscap A4 Half Flap Rigid Card Document Wallets Assorted Colours – Pack of 5

Write your own Percy the Park Keeper Story

I have been trying to encourage my daughter to write short stories.  She is not a natural story-teller like her younger brother but we are slowly getting there.  One of the things that seem to work with her is if we use a story that she knows (one of her story books) and then we ask her to create her own version.

We have done a few of these stories with her but mostly with her just telling us the story.  This time I wanted to try and get her to write her own short story, so we used one of her favourite characters, Percy the Park Keeper.  We started off by downloading the black and white stick puppets from Twinkl (FREE) and she and her brother coloured them in (we spaced if over a few days and did 2 copies so that we could get a nice range of characters).  Then I set up a story telling area for her.   I also added some pencil crayons and some woodland stickers in case she wanted to add any extra touches.

Percy the Park keeper writing your own versionShe did get a bit stuck with some spelling so I gave her the Park word mat (Twinkl FREE) that we have used before, as I really wanted her to try to write it by herself.

It was not a very long story but it was her story so I am thrilled and more importantly she was very proud of the end result.  And the stickers ended up being a great distraction for her younger brother.
