Our Christmas tree is out

So I finally gave in and the kids put out a Christmas tree – well sort of.  The kids drew a Christmas tree onto our sliding doors.

I love having child-made Christmas goodies in the house.  Last night the tree on our sliding door and the Christmas Luminaries really gave the room a lovely festive feeling.

We used the Extra Large Christmas tree outline which is FREE to download from Twinkl (you just need to set up a free account) and I taped it onto the outside of our sliding doors.

Then the kids traced over the outline with their STABILO 3-in-1 pencils.  In case you missed my earlier posts about using these pencils on glass they wipe off afterwards so they are great for letting little artists draw onto windows and sliding doors.

I really like doing this type of activity with the kids as my youngest always joins in with the tracing and it is excellent for the kids to draw with their arms raised like this (one of the things that my son’s Occupational Therapist is always telling us to do at home).

We love our thick STABILO woody 3in1 Wallet of 10 colours – Multi-talented pencil
pencils as not only do they wipe off glass nicely but they are nice and thick for younger ones still getting their pencil grips right.  We have also used them on laminated learning pages, glass bottles , cardboard boxes and if you dip them in water they become water-colour pencils.  I think they would make a great Christmas pressie for a little artist.

Christmas Luminaries

We are already in Christmas craft mode at our house.  In the past the kids have made decorated bottles for storing our art goodies and they loved the activity it so I thought it would be fun to make some Christmassy bottles.

I kept aside some old food bottles that would have been recycled and washed them in warm water so that all the advertising paper came off.  (Later note – we have made a number of these bottles now and the old Jam bottles or wider bottles tend to work better).

Some of the bottles the kids choose to paint with their acrylic paints and some they just left plain.

Then we printed out about 4 copies of Twinkl’s Christmas story stones (platinum)

and my daughter and I cut out the images together and the kids got started glueing the pictures onto the bottles.

We used our Mod Podge for the glueing (Mod Podge is great for lots of crafting activities I normally just order ours from Amazon but you ca also get it at craft stores –Mod Podge 8 oz Waterbase Sealer, Glue and Finish, Clear ).  We tend to add quite a bit of glue and we painted the glue over the edges of the pictures.  Once the glue had all dried we added our Tea Light candles and placed the bottles on the window sills.

I really love how they look on our window sills.  They bring a lovely festive feeling to the room, especially at night when the candles inside are lite and all the other lights are out.

Good thing I have lots of space in the house for all the Christmas bottles.

SPD – It is getting easier

If you are a parent with an SPD kiddie I hope after reading this you get some encouragement.  Yesterday we did an outing with our two SPD kiddies, an outing that just last year would have been difficult and yesterday it was fine, in fact there was no meltdown, no SPD issues just two kiddies having fun.

We have been wanting to go back to the Natural History museum for a while as both kids are very interested in dinosaurs but I have to admit the outing fills me with dread.  Whenever we have been in the past it has been exhausting,  we need to use the underground to get there, there are crowds, it is noisy and the kids tend to get overwhelmed before we even get inside the museum.

Anyway last week we decided to just go for it.  So yesterday I had my backpack all ready (ear muffs, extra clothes, snacks and a soft toy to cuddle if needed) the kids were dressed in cosy soft clothes and in the cold rainy weather we set off.

On the way

Our train was delayed and what should have been a half hour trip ended up being an hour but both kids where fine on the overground train, then it was time to change to the underground.  Dread.  We had to take two underground trains (engineering works) and for the first time my daughter managed the tube without her ear-muffs, she never asked once, she covered her ears only once for a quick second when she got a fright but the rest of the time she was fine.  No hiding her face in my coat, no over-excited flapping she walked holding my hands like a pro.

By the time we got to the museum it was later than we had planned we had a short que but we soon where inside and the exploring began.  Both kids looked at every Dinosaur display and loved it.  I did have to carry my daughter past the big T-Rex as the combination of the low lights, moving and roaring was just a bit too realistic but after we got past she continued on.

We even managed a toilet break and a nice lunch at the cafe and then both kids asked if they could see more.  What ?  Not time to go home ?  Yes both kids after a short break where ready to continue

We eventually headed home and even though she was exhausted she again managed the underground like a super-star, she did not flinch once or cover her ears.

By the time we changed onto the overground train for our last bit home she did lie with her head in my lap but she was just tired, happy tired not SPD over-exhausted tired.

Home and still no issues in fact at bed-time both kids asked which museum we could go to next ?

So if you dread taking your SPD kiddies on the underground or you dread busy public places.  Please read this and know that a trip which just a year ago would have filled me with dread was now a big success.  And yes I know in the future the same trip might end up with tears if something goes different but for me it gives me the courage to try.  It gives me the knowledge that slowly both kids are getting better at managing their SPD and hopefully it might also mean that us parents are getting better at understanding their needs and helping them with it.

Spot the word

My youngest is very eager to start reading books.  Whenever he sees me sitting with his sister listening to her read he immediately goes and fetches his BOB readers and asks if he can also do some reading.  I do love the BOB readers as they are very repetitive, great for very basic readers and they are at just the right level for him at the moment.

Bob readers

I am thrilled with his eagerness to read and I want to find fun ways of encouraging him and helping him.  We tend to do a mix of phonics and sight words so I thought I would put together a Spot the Word folder for him.  Nothing fancy, just 2 pieces of A4 card with some basic words cut out of old magazines and the advertising pamphlets we get in the mail.  I purposely stuck a number of THE words for him to spot and I tried to include lots of different fonts (my daughter really battled with reading different fonts so I am aware that for some kids this can be an issue).

Spot the word folding - using a 4 card and words cut out of old magazinesI  stuck the two pieces of A4 card together with sticky tape.

Spot the word folder - quick and easy to make at home ofamilyblogMy daughter liked this idea so she is busy making her own version.

Spot the word - bigger words

Very quick and easy to make but it turned out to be a fun way for my youngest to practice some of his basic words and I think it will be fun to add onto as he learns more words.

Skwooshi Magic !!

My kids and I were recently given some Skwooshi, never heard of it ?  Think of play dough and Kinetic Sand combined and this stuff does not dry out – yes you heard me – you can leave it out for days and it is perfect.   I have to warn you though it is very addictive, once the kids start playing with it they will be lost for hours and adults ……….. if you are brave enough to try you will find yourself sitting with the kids playing along.

Skwooshi

To start with both kids began using it like they would play dough – they rolled it, made shapes with it, used their play dough cutters and other goodies with it.

Skwooshi can be used like playdough

My son soon brought his Dinosaurs into the mix.  He used them to make footprints and create “fossils”, he used it in his Dinosaur play fights – honestly hours and hours of fun. Then he pulled the Skwooshi up and he saw the “waterfall effect” for the first time.  My son says it is Skwooshi rain and he loves it.

And once the kids experienced the “waterfall effect” they just could not stop.

So you are probably thinking okay what are the benefits.  Apart from the hours of imaginary play and keeping the kids occupied for a large portion of last week it is great for strengthening the kids fingers.  And for SPD kiddies like mine, both find it very relaxing to play with.  I personally think it makes a great sensory tool for SPD kiddies.

Benefits for us moms – it does not dry out !!!  I have tested this all week and honestly whether I leave it out during the day/night or whether I pack it away it is always ready for play.  Ours arrived in these great plastic containers which are perfect for storing it in.

Skwooshi Container before and after play

Also the mess factor –  what mess ?  If small bits break off all you do get some of the Skwooshi in your hand and dab on the small bits and it magically sticks back together – no mess left.  Carpets – no issue at all.  My son did get some on our carpet and a quick dab and it lifted up without leaving any marks.

How much do we love it ?   We love it so much that Santa is going to be bringing each kiddie another tub.

You can buy Skwooshi from Amazon here – Skwooshi 85g Container
