Random learning in a house still fill of boxes

Our unpacking has been slow, my bookcase that I ordered for the homeschooling stuff is only getting here in a weeks time and both Pink and I are sick so boxes have been left unpacked……….  but as I am learning more and more that has not meant that the kids have stopped learning.

Blue found some of his puzzles which in turn encouraged Pink to build some (Pink is not as keen on puzzles as little brother but she hates to be excluded).

Both kids helped their dad build a rocking chair

And pink has been walking around with her clipboard and my measuring tape taking notes of how big our household items are (think the idea came form seeing me measuring the space where I wanted the bookcase to go). This is an activity which I hope to build on some more when I am feeling a bit better as Pink practiced her writing, her spelling and measuring all at once and she loved it.

Both kids have also been creating masterpieces with whatever bits of arty/ crafty supplies that they can lay their hands on.  I have loved these pictures, as they have really been using their imaginations, part of me wants to keep the rest of the art supplies hidden for a little while longer just to see what they will create with just their paper, crayons and a few stickers.

They have helped me bake jam biscuits and date balls.  These are two snacks which my kids will choose time and time again over store bought goodies.  (the recipes are included in earlier posts under baking with kids). And both are great sensory activities.

Oh an we have also been catching bubbles in our new garden, another great sensory activity.

So all in all trying hard not to feel to guilty about leaving the unpacked boxes lying around and curling up on my couch under a blanket while the kids build their train track and play trains.

Moving with kids and letting them take the lead

Moving with kids is never easy.  We have managed to do 2 International moves and a number of smaller moves in London since we become parents and it does not get easier, I never seem to get it right.  But what the latest move taught me is that kids really do actually want to learn if only us parents would take the stress/ nagging out of it.

I decided that we would have a weeks break from our homeschooling while we moved but my Pink had other plans (that is her sitting at my desk surrounded by boxes doing some maths).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

She loved joining in with packing the boxes and driving in the van with her dad to take them to the new house but what really surprised me was that once we got to the new house she very quickly got her “school stuff” out and was drawing pictures, writing notes and reading her readers.  I was not expecting this.  I often have to ask her more than once to do her writing or her readers but yet in the week that I took all the pressure off and was trying to get our new house sorted she did it all by herself.  Makes one think that maybye half the battle is actually just us parents telling the kids what to do instead of letting them do it themselves when they are ready.

Everyday this  week Pink has done something that I would consider school work and everyday this week it has been Pink getting it out and doing it, no asking from me, no direction from me, just Pink wanting to read or Pink wanting to write a letter to her dad, practice some maths or draw a picture etc etc.

In our homeschooling adventure I have tried to follow her lead and do activities based on what she is interested in (eg animals or our latest flower craze) but I have always insisted that we do some basic maths and phonics within these interests.  So I suppose it is part child lead learning, part structured learning.  We have days where she is excited to do her work and days where it is a battle to get her to sit down and do it.  We have days where she seems to spend the whole day doing activity after activity followed by days of barely doing anything but I have always had a basic plan or idea in my head that we need to cover certain things within a certain time frame.  But as we go further along our homeschooling journey I am adjusting the way that we do things and I am noticing that the biggest adjustment is actually the way in which I TRUST my KIDS.  I am learning (I do backslide from time to time) that my kids respond to me trusting them as little people and respecting them and their wants (please do not get me wrong here I do still believe in letting the kids know when they have crossed a line).

From starting out not sure if we should homeschool I know am realising that I am actually the one learning the most, I am learning so much about my kids and the little people that they are already.  I am learning that kids naturally want to learn and explore the world around them and that they will do it even without us adults nagging them.

Another exciting development our move brought was both kids moving into their children’s bedroom.  In our old house we had a mommy and daddy room and a children’s room but both the kids always slept in the mommy and daddy room. I never made a big deal of it as I tried sleep training Pink once when she was 2 years old and both Pink and I ended up miserable.  Pink is a very sensitive, gentle child who still needs lots of help from us to manage her SPD so we never wanted the sleeping arrangements to become an issue.  She needs a good nights sleep to manage with her hyper-senses and for a long time that meant her being able to reach a hand out and know that mommy was there.  The first 2 nights in the new house Pink and Blue slept in the new mommy and daddy room, but once they settled into the new house Pink informed us that she was sleeping in the childrens room and NO ADULTS ALLOWED.  Very chuffed, once again my little girl is showing me that when we stop pushing and let them take the lead they actually get their by themselves when the time is right.  Now if I only I can remember that more often !!!!

Rainbow cupcakes

The kids wanted to bake this morning and with us moving in a weeks time most of the non-essential stuff is in the process of being packed so I cheated a bit and used a cake mixture.    Once we had our cake mixture ready we divided it into 4 bowls and added our colours – we used red, blue, yellow and green but you could use any colours.  A Tip – do not be scared about adding the food colouring, the first time we did this we did not add enough and the colours on the cupcakes where not that great.

Image

Then the fun really began.  I let the kids decide how to combine the colours for the cupcakes.  Pink was determined that each cupcake needed a bit of each colour and did her best to ensure that but Blue well all he wanted was Blue cupcakes.   I have to admit that it did get a bit messy but both kids really enjoyed spooning out the mixture and fulling up the muffin tray that I had given them.

And the end result a very tasty treat.

This was such a fun baking experience for both my kids and I would highly recommend trying it, we will be doing this again.

We have also been making other rainbow cupcakes

I gave the kids a basic template of 2 large cupcakes each and the painted and cut them out.

The after the paint had dried we got out our pom poms and stickers to decorate.  Such a simple but fun art activity for the kids.

Mix of word activities that we have been doing

We have been doing a bit of a mix of word work lately but somehow it all seems to be coming together.  Blue has is going through that stage where he thinks everyone is a HE (Pink did the same around this age she thought everyone was a SHE) so I thought I would use this as an excuse to revisit some of the male verses female words with Pink.  I made this very simple printout where she had to cut out the words and stick them on the correct page – one page has a small picture of a girl and one has a small picture of a boy.  Pink always enjoys doing some cutting and sticking so I knew this would be a hit.  BOY Verses GIRL download.

We have also been doing some more of the spelling pages that she asked for.  This one is just a general one page of nature words. On her first attempt she did make a few mistakes but it was because she was trying to use her phonic sounds to spell the words.

Image

We have been updating our calender cards and paying particular attention to the day of the week words.  So I made her some colouring in pages to go with these.  These seem to be helping as she is getting much better at reading her days of the week.  Days of week coluring page.

Image

She has also been going through the Colour word Dot marker pages that 3 Dinosaurs did – she loves these.

Image

Oh and out of the blue yesterday I noticed that she was following when I was reading them a story.  I used the incorrect word and she stopped me, pointed to the word and told me what it was.  I think I have a backseat reader now !!!

Wet nature play, happy kids

Today is our morning to go and explore nature in Richmond Park but is was raining again so I asked the kids what did they want.  Answer  – lets go jump in puddles.  So waterproofs on and off we set (or I should say Kids waterproof’s on, no wonder they where keen to go and me not so keen, I got soaked, maybye I also need a waterproof).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe love our narure play group in Richmond, it is a all weather all age group.  My kids always have fun and always moan when I say it is time to leave.  We are going to be very sad to miss out on all this fun when we move.  Here is the link, have a peak it is really great I can highly recommend it  Nature play link

This week we did not do much tree climbing like we normally go but both kids played by the stream, jumped in puddles, got covered in mud, saw some birds, saw a hug worm and some tadpoles and so much more.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASo yes I am glad we went, I did get soaked and I was very happy to get home and get some dry clothes on but why should that stop my kids from getting out and exploring,  Think it is time for me to find some waterproof pants.

I love this post about nature from Pyjama school
