Maths – adding using 10.

We have these lovely number cards which Cassie from 3 Dinosaurs made for Free Homeschool Deals which we have used a lot with out snap cubes (if you are not sure what snap cubes are check out the link – we love ours).  I have often given the numbers cards to Pink and asked her to use her snap cubes to represent the number correctly.

But today Pink used the cards differently.  Her Ouma (gran) who is visiting set out the cards like the picture below (one card for a number bigger than ten and the ten card).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAPink then had to figure out what the missing number was (eg you have 15 and 10 the missing number is 5).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOne Pink had figured that out she would get her snap cubes to show the numbers.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAVery simple, but visual way of learning that what 10 plus x equals.  This really sunk in and after her bath Pink was actually repeating the sums to the family without using the cards.

A little bit of quiet in a busy house

Our house has been unusually busy this last week.  Pink’s Ouma is visiting from South Africa and their dad is on holiday so there is not as much quiet and down time as Pink likes and to be honest needs. But all credit to Pink by day 2 of the busy house I noticed she had carved out a little corner with her playdough where she could sit and play and get some much needed deep pressure in her hands.  I did not say anything at first as I wanted everyone to leave her alone and thankfully the other adults in the house did not notice this quiet play for a little while. Blue is naturally the louder child so he often distracts people which actually is often a blessing for Pink as it lets her get on with her activities. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA But by the end of day 2 her playdough corner had been discovered by Blue so the quiet was gone (although I have to give credit to Blue for a 3.5 year old he is very good at realizing when big sister needs some downtime). OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA But thankfully we now have a bit more space so I managed to create a few more corners for some quiet play –  her cupcake playdough set, her sticker books and other art activities.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I am so proud that she is starting to know when she needs to have a break from the chaos and that she is now able to set herself with an activity that she can do quietly.  Such good progress and yes a clear indication that kids with sensory processing disorder do learn how to cope better as they get older.  So I know that as long as we continue down our path life will get easier and we will start coping better.  And that for any mother of a child with sensory processing disorder is what helps us sleep better especially after one of those days when it all goes wrong !!

Calender cards – Months in Afrikaans

A very quick short post as I just realised that I had forgotten to post the Month calender cards that I made in Afrikaans.  When I first made Afrikaans calender cards I only included cards for the months of May and June but I have now made them for all 12 months.

I am hoping to try and make some more boyish calender cards next week as Blue is wanting to join in and is not so keen on the flowers .

Birds – Mini Bird packs in English and Afrikaans

I started making these about 2 months ago and then with the move and just homeschooling in general I never finished them.  They are not very long but it is my first attempt at a basic themed pack.  I have done one in English and one in Afrikaans.  I am hoping to do a few more longer ones soon.

I left the Afrikaans 3 part cards in the lounge and when the kids came down this morning they quickly found them and where soon sitting with their Ouma, repeating the Afrikaans names and matching the cards.

While Ouma was redoing the Afrikaans cards with Blue for a second time Pink asked for the English Bird cards and started reading the bird names and matched them to the pictures.

We did some of the word maizes but Blue joined in so it ended up being a bit of a mess with lots of lines everywhere.  He is demanding that he gets his own school work these days, I had no intention of starting that with him yet (he is still young) but I have given in as he likes to be included and it helps to keep him busy so that I can spend time with Pink on her work.

Catching stars – phonic fun

A few weeks ago we went around to a friends house and they where fishing for sight words, what a great fun idea !!!!  I had been thinking of revising some of the harder phonic sounds with Pink so I borrowed the idea and changed it a bit and now we have catching stars in our house.  Both kids loved it so much that I ended up making a 2nd catching stars game for Blue using the numbers 1- 10.

I printed off some of the phonics sounds in stars, laminated them and attached paper clips to them.

Then the kids got the horse-shoe magnets and started catching the stars.  Pink did really well saying all the sounds and ended up reading the sounds for Blue when he joined in.

And after playing with the stars Pink went to her white board and practiced writing the sounds out.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe kids really enjoyed this and it was good phonic practice for Pink, so a winner in our house.

I am attaching the star phonic sheets below and the number as well.
