Lets go on an African adventure

We have recently been having some fun learning about African animals.  We have done a number of activities on this theme before but the kids always seem to enjoy it so we often end up coming back to it.

I started off by creating a little African animal world in the corner of our lounge.

African animal small world

The background picture is printed off Twinkl (Platinum) safari small world background.  I stuck some plain green paper on the bottom of the box and added some green shredded paper.  The animals and the tree where all existing toys out of the kids playbox.

As the kids played so they added their own animals and bits and pieces

African animal labels

The safari labels and the  african animal word mat that my daughter used are FREE to download from Twinkl.

My son had his own idea about his african world.  We have been reading a lot lately about dinosaurs and he thought that a meteorite should land in the african animal world.  With the result being…………………..

But that is one of the reason that I love setting up these little play areas for the kids.  They always find fun and creative ways to play with them.  And we always end up talking about new and interesting topics.  With my son we discussed which animals are carnivores and herbivores and who would win in a fight a lion or a T-Rex while my daughter was very much animal group classification focussed.

We managed to quickly print off these great classification posters and we discussed which animals would go into which group. Animal group posters (Twinkl have recently updated these posters so they do not look identical to the ones in the photos)

We also found these great African animal masks on Twinkl (gold).

African animal masksThe kids had a great time making the animal noises and we even played a game where the kids would try to move like the animal mask that they where wearing.  Both kids really enjoyed the masks and they tied nicely in with the South African readers that my daughter has been reading called the cub series.  It is all about this little lion cub Lucas and his animal friends and what they get up to.

I also used the opportunity to practice some of our number words.  My daughter has been learning how to spell the number words for 11 to 20.  To start off with I wrote the words on the editable safari labels and then she needed to match the labels with the picture of the animal and write the correct number.  We then reversed the activity where I wrote the numbers and she then had to write the matching words.  The labels we used are the editable safari labels (the same ones my daughter used above) and we used these safari animal posters (I printed 4 to a page).  I choose the editable version so that we could laminate them and use them to write numbers and or words on them.  But you can also download them with the numbers already printed on.

My son has also been doing these great african animal themed maths puzzles.

And we still have a bunch more African themed activities lined up including some more art projects.  If you missed my earlier post we recently did a fun activity using some african animal stencils – here is the post African animal stencil pictures.

African animal stencil pictures

This week we are doing a bunch of activities around African animals.  We have a small African world set up in the one corner of our lounge and the kids have been enjoying it, although I must admit my son seems to be loving the idea of introducing his T-Rex into the African world.  hmm

To start out African week I thought we would do an art project.  I printed off these great FREE stencils from trusty Twinkl and cut them out on some card.  (Safari animal templates)

We used some blue tack to stick the stencils onto some paper and then the kids coloured around and over the stencils with their oil pastels.

Paper flower making

I saw this idea over Christmas, a lady at a Christmas craft made these into some Christmas decorations.  When I saw them I immediately thought they would be great as flowers.  And yes we are still in winter but I always find that by the time I get to February I am in desperate need for some extra colour so these are going to be our winter flowers.  And I have to admit I am enjoying having the extra colour in our lounge.

flowers

They really are very easy to make.

You start off with some rectangle paper – we have used coloured paper and some old wrapping paper for this.

flowers step 1You then need to start folding the paper.  You start with the shortest end in front of you. Make a fold about 2cm wide and then turn the paper over and make another fold.  Continue until you come to the end of the paper.

flowers step 2The end result of all the folding should be something like this.

flower step 3Now tie some string in the middle.  I found it looks very effective if you add some small buttons onto the string (my daughter likes adding pom poms)

flower step 4You now need to join to ends of the paper together.  I used glue on my flowers but my daughter found it easier to use some sticky tape for this.

flower step 5

flowers step 6My daughter also liked the idea of using pipe cleaners instead of the string.  She would wrap it around the middle and then let the extra bit hang down as the stem of the flower.

Some more Afrikaans pages

The lovely people at Twinkl have really been great about making some stunning Afrikaans cards and pages.  I just love the way the pages have turned out, the graphics are fabulous and it really has added some colour to our Afrikaans learning.

So here are some of the pages that we have been using, all of these can be downloaded from the Twinkl website and are part of the FREE Afrikaans resource pack.

As anyone who reads my little blog knows we love the train pages on Twinkl, we have used them a lot and the kids still love them so I could not resist translating the months of the year onto this lovely train.  I really like the fact that the kids can build the train by placing the months in the correct order.  Both my kids enjoy learning when they can use their hands to build or sort something.

Maande 2Maande

My kids are also animal mad so we have been enjoying the lovely African animal word mat.  I printed off the editable self registration safari animal labels  from Twinkl (FREE) to go with the word mat and my daughter has been using them to practice writing out the animal names.

Afrikaans writing 2

Afrikaans writingI laminated the pages so we can use them for English and Afrikaans writing.

We have some simple bird cards that I made a while ago for the kids to use (Birds in Afrikaans and English).  My youngest really seemed to like these and will often proudly translate an english bird into an Afrikaans bird for me.  So I love the fact that he now has an Afrikaans Bird word mat.

Afrikaans bird mat

Our general house rule since the kids have been born is that I speak English to them and my husband speaks Afrikaans.  We try to stick to this and as a result my kids often feel the need to translate what daddy is saying for me.  Their constant translating for “us parents” has really helped them with both languages and I am constantly amased at the ease at which my oldest can switch between the two languages.  My son is still battling a bit and will often include an Afrikaans word in an English sentence and vice versa.  I know that with time, this will come but to help in the mean time we have been using some of the word mats as a way of helping him group his English words and his Afrikaans words.  (I have translated a fruit word mat and an emotions word mat which will also be uploaded onto the Twinkl website soon.)

Oh and I have to mention these – one of my favourites – the colourful crayons.  I just love the way they look hanging up in the kids bedroom.

Afrikaans colours

I hope that you will go and check out these fab looking Afrikaans pages on the Twinkl website.  My kids have really been enjoying them this past week and keep asking me for more (think we might need to get another cork notice board as both of ours are now totally filled up).

A little bit snowman crazy

Both my kids love Olaf so naturally they are now big into snowmen and they have been waiting, not so patiently for us to get some snow.  When it finally snowed they where so excited and had a great time playing in the snow (unfortunately it was not that deep but they did build some mini snowmen).

snow

While we have been not so patiently waiting for the snow we have done a few snowmen learning activities (how could we not).  Here are our current three  favourite snowman learning activities ( I say current as I have just printed off some snowmen cards to use in a rhyming activity tomorrow).

We loved the build a snowman alphabet activity (platinum on Twinkl).  I printed this with my son in mind but I must confess that my daughter loved joining in.  The kids also really enjoyed using the snowmen heads to build some simple words.

I also could not resist printing out these snowman number bonds  (gold on Twinkl).  We used ours to make a poster for the kids room which my daughter loves.  (She learnt her number bonds to 10 from the very cool rainbow page and I have a feeling the snowmen poster in her room will be how she ends up remembering the number bonds to 20).

And our other favourite snowman activity are these upper case and lower case matching cards.  I downloaded these for my daughter when she was learning her alphabet and now my son has taken them over and he loves them.  These cards are from Royal Baloo and are part of their preschool snowman pack

Fingers crossed we might still get some more snow and hopefully get a chance to build some more snowmen.
