Learning about the Human Body

Learning about the human body with the Usborne see inside your body and Smart Lab Squishy Human Body

Human Biology is not something I have ever been that interested in.  I like science but the science that involves experiments, chemical reactions, forces anything really but not the human body.  However my kids are completely fascinated by the human body so fascinated that it has been a bit of an ongoing, in the background, type theme for the past few months.  We will spend a week or so reading some books, talking about it, answering questions using our Squishy body and then the kids move on to their next topic but sure enough in 3 or 4 weeks time we end up back reading our body books, answering more and more questions and so the pattern continues.  What has been wonderful about this pattern is each time the kids come back to it they have clearly had time to process some of the information and their understanding is better and they ask more and more detailed questions.

We started off with some books that we checked out of our local library and our Usborne Questions and Answers about the Human Body book.  It was a great way to get them curious about the body and the Question and Answer book answered a lot of their more basic questions.  Then they progressed onto this lovely Usborne book – See Inside Your Body (Usborne Flap Books) (Usborne See Inside)
.

See inside your body great for young kids learning about bodies

This book is amazing it makes learning about your body interesting and gives lots of information without totally overwhelming and confusing you.  The book is broken down into these sections

  • Your amazing body
  • Eating and excreting
  • Breathing air
  • pumping blood
  • Bones and muscles
  • Brain Power
  • The senses
  • Drinking and weeing
  • Body words

The illustrations are incredible.

I was so encouraged by how much the kids were learning by just reading their books and I really wanted to encourage them so we bought this – Smart Lab Squishy Human Body.  Wow this is amazing

Smart Lab Squishy Human a hands on way to ler kids learn about the human body

Talk about hands on learning.  The kids get to take apart and rebuild the body.

Smart Lab Squish Human Body being rebuilt by my 5 year old sonAnd it comes with a sheet called an Organizer – a page with diagrams and labels of all the body parts so the kids can place the body parts on the sheet and learn what each part is called.

Smart Lab Squishy Human body Organizer

We all love it yes even me who never enjoyed biology actually enjoys spending time with the kids learning with the Squishy Body.  The detail is more than I expected.  The way it all fits together is incredible.

The model comes with a booklet which talks about the different parts but we have actually not gone through the booklet in detail yet.  The kids used the summarised instructions and they have built the body over and over again.  As they build the body we talk about the different parts – the skeleton, the muscles, the organs and the fact that everything is covered in the shell (which would be our skin).

We have already spend hours with both our See Inside the Body book and our Squishy Human body but I have no doubt that we have only scratched the surfaces of how much we are going to use these two resources in our home learning.  And shock and horror for me I am for the first time actually enjoying learning about the human body alongside my kids.

Craft Stick Home-Made Base 10

We love our Learning Resources Grooved Plastic Base Ten Starter Set (I bought ours a few years ago and it has so far been that most used Maths resources that we own).  In fact I will probably be buying some extra items to add to our set very soon (I want to expand it so both kids can use it together – so need some more hundreds and thousands) but before I invested in our set we had a very simple home-made version of Base 10 using craft sticks.

Place value ice-cream cones from Twinkl with our craft sticks

My daughter first started learning about tens and ones using our craft stick set and we still have it.  It is very simple and easy to set up. My daughter and I actually created our set together.  All you need are craft sticks and elastic bands (if you are in the UK we bought our crafts sticks at Baker Ross – 250 craft sticks from Baker Ross for £2.50).

Group some of the craft sticks into groups of 10 and then wrap your elastic band around.  Also leave some craft sticks loose (they will be your ones).

Simple and easy enough so that the kids can help you set it up.

They are great to use with magnetic numbers.  We bought these ELC Magnetic Numbers over 4 years ago and we have used them soooooooooo many times.

They are also great as a way of encouraging the kids to write out their own numbers.

Using crafts sticks for maths at home learningWe have used ours to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and of course with our place value activities.

And when the kids start working with hundreds – it is a great way of reenforcing that fact that 10 groups of 10 = 100

We store our craft stick set in some plastic containers on one of our bookshelves within easy reach of both kiddies.

Letter and Sound folder Update including Long Vowel Sounds

Letter and Sound folder updated to include some long vowel sounds

My son’s Letter and Sound folder that I made him last year as been a big life saver for me.  I printed off the pages and did all the laminating and cutting and then left it on the bookshelf so when I wanted an activity it was all set up waiting.  It did take me some time to set it all up initially but I found that the upfront time spent setting it all up was worth it as I could just grab goodies out whenever I needed them.

So with that in mind and the fact that my son has now started learning the long vowel sounds and other more complicated sounds I thought it was time to update his folder.  And yes it did take me some time to find the activities, print them, laminate and cut them but I know that the time I spent setting it all up will be worth it when life gets busy and chaotic. I will be adding more activities to the folder but for now I think it is a nice start.

So what have I used.

Laddie the Labrador says..(this set is Free from Twinkl). The kids have to match the word that Laddie is saying to a picture.

Laddie the Labrador says matching card activity from Twinkl

I already know this is going to be a hit with my little boy.   This contains lots of different sounds so my plan is to select certain cards as we learn the sounds.

I have also printed a new set of the missing sound cards (phase 3 set) from Twinkl.  We used a set of these cards for the basic sounds and they worked really well as my son could use them both with his magic letters and with his white board marker pens (so yes I have laminated these cards so we can re-use them a couple of times).

Missing sound cards including some long vowel sounds

I stumbled onto this Secret Word Phonic game by accident and my kids have already been using it (my oldest has been helping the youngest figure out some of the sounds which he has not learnt yet).  And they think it is great.  I think it would be a fun revision game to do with the kids once they have learnt all the sounds.

I have also included more of the what’s in the box cards from Twinkl.  We used the phase 2 cards a lot.  I have included the Phase 3 cards (Free to download) and I am sure at some stage I will be printing off the phase 4 cards.  With these cards I start off my only giving him the cards containing the sounds that he is busy learning but once we have covered all the sounds I then mix all the cards up and we have a couple of revision goes.  I have laminated these cards as we used the phase 2 cards a lot and I like that we can use our white board marker pens on them.  We sometimes trace over the words and we also have used the cards to hunt for vowels so laminating them is a must for me.

Magic e.  At the moment the only magic e activity that I have included are these magic e wand cards (I will definitely be adding more later).  The are available for each vowel.  I think I might actually use the new Twinkl font to create some of our own magic e cards.

With the folder I try to stick to cards/ activities and I print off worksheets or pages as I need them but I have included a couple of pages in my folder already.  I really like the idea of these spot the sound pages.  I think they are great to use with the kids when they are learning the new long vowel sounds

Sound story spotter

And lastly I just printed these last night and have not done my cutting and laminating yet but I had to include them.  Missing sound peg cards (and I do love a peg card activity).  The idea is that the sounds in the little boxes below are cut out and stuck onto your pegs then the kids will select which peg to use to complete the word.  Love it.  definitely worth the cutting and laminating.

Card making

Home-made cards for young kids to make, encourages writing, spelling, colouring and cutting. ofamilyblog

I am always trying to find ways to encourage my daughter to write.  She has never been one to enjoy writing and I never wanted to make it a huge deal.

She loves making cards for family and friends so we have tried to encourage this as much as possible.  For me, card making = creative activity, sometimes including drawing  or colouring + writing practice + spelling practice + practice at verbalizing how she is feeling.  So yes WIN WIN WIN.  We love cards making as an activity in our house.

And everyone who receives a card always makes a big deal –  honestly who would not love been given a hand-made card ? –  which just ends up encouraging my daughter to make more and more cards.  Her father and I have a much-loved ever-growing collection of these cards.

Card makingShe also enjoys making cards for her grandparents who live overseas.  I am not allowed to see these cards as they are just for her gran-gran and grandpa but both grandparents have informed me that they are very much-loved and that they contain lovely little notes inside.

Making cards for grandparents

Most of her hand-made cards are made using this little set which she loves – it is folded card and envelopes, but she loves the fact that she has her own card box.  I think it makes her feel very grown-up to have her own little box of cards to use.

Card set

I find her card box is taken out and used at least twice every week.  Her enthusiasm for card making has infected her little brother and he has now also started making some – mostly for his cousins or his big sister and mostly using stickers (the stickers used in the photo below are from Baker Ross).  But it is a great start.

Card making using stickers from Baker RossAnd he has now extended his card making skills to include some cutting pages that he did recently.  I wish I had thought of this earlier as it has become a great incentive for him to practice his cutting.  The pictures that he used in the photo below are part of the cutting skills packs from Twinkl – Jungle themed cutting pack and the shapes cutting pack.

Cards made by young kids using the cutting skill pages from Twinkland he has started writing a few words in his cards.

We have also managed to extend the kids love of card making to include colouring cards (they always pick the cards from the Activity Village website themselves).  My daughter did the daffodil card for a friend who she was missing at the time.

Flower card

And her brother joined in and did this cute frog card for his friend.

They have also made a few of these I love you cards – my daughter in particular likes to make these ones.  The more detailed I love you card did take some time to colour in but we did it as an activity together for her dad

I love you colouring cards from Activity village

Oh and still a firm favourite with both my kids are Tissue paper cards.  They still enjoy making these – here is an old post that I did about them – Heart cards for children to make.

Like I mentioned above card making ticks lots of boxes in our house.

Froggy 4 times table

4 times table number line

As part of my determination to make Maths fun I have been trying to find interesting ways to work on our times table.  We have made a few fun folding aids, we have played some jumping games and now we have a Lily pad number line stuck up in our house.

Yip we have a lily pad number line in our home – now that is something I never thought I would ever say.

I liked this idea as it is something that we can leave up over the next few weeks and my daughter will keep seeing it and she will keep being reminded by it.  She is a very visual learner so having visual aids like this around the house really makes a big difference.  The key is not to have too many at one go and to know when to replace the exisiting ones with new ones.

The lily pad number line is free to download from Activity village. And just because we love having some cute goodies to play around with we used the Frog Number line makers to create our own frog stick  puppets.  ADJUSTMENT – when writing the post both were free to download but the Activity Village website has since changed and now these are part of their paid for membership deal.

Frogs from activity village

My daughter and son had some fun getting their frogs to only jump on the multiple of 4 Lily Pads.

Froggy jumping on multiplies of four

And we also made some 4 times table cards which my daughter stuck under the correct lily pads.

4 times table practice with the lillypad number line from activity village

And the day after we stuck up our new Lily Pad number line the neighbours frogs came to visit us in the garden (yes honest – our neighbours have some tadpoles and frogs in their garden and the frogs apparently like our garden too – kids are very excited about this).
