Learning by parking our cars (toy cars)

I have have seen a number of different versions of this on Pinterest so I thought I would give it a go.  I wrote out a number of words that we had recently learnt and some words which Pink gets confused.  Then I left the piece of paper with a basket of their cars on a table in and waited till morning.  Within about 10 minutes of coming downstairs Pink was looking at the set-up and asked what she needed to do, I explained and off she set.  As she parked a car on a word she would say the word.

This was a great success, it is so easy to do and such good practice for the kids.

A few days after we did this Pink got a highlighter out and went back through the list of words saying them and crossing the words out as she said the word.  She took great pride in showing me the piece of paper with all the words crossed out.

This was such a big hit that I thought we would change it slightly for Blue as he asked me to teach him his numbers.  I wrote numbers on stickers inside a car outline and then he had to park the car in the correct place. Pink and Blue did this together.

Just 5 of our homeschooling tools

Just some of our top learning tools.

One of my kids all time favourite games is Orchards Shopping list game.  They love this.  Now that Blue is getting a bit older he and pink have actually started playing the game without us parents and they now use their 2 bears to make up the 4 players.  This is a great memory game as they need to remember where they put down the pieces, but it is also a great vocab game and great at helping them learn about taking turns (this is often the hardest part of the game).

We are also big fans of our magnetic letters and numbers (we got ours at ELC here in the UK).  We have used these letters for so many things.  We have hidden them in sensory bins for letter hunts, have played games where the kids need to match the lower case letter with the capital letters, we have used them to create words on our magnetic board and Pink has used them to help her letter writing.  When Pink was really struggling with her writing in Reception we would dig out the letter that we where writing and pink would trace over the letter with her finger and then place it at the top of her page while she practiced forming her letters.  If you do not have a magnetic board you can use a baking tray.

Our Plastic animals.  We have all kinds, all different brands, we never seem to have enough of these.  Both kids are always making up great stories with their animals, our animals have been taken all over the house in the back of trucks and trains.  We have also used out plastic animals a lot with out maths.  Pink loves adding or subtracting or even working out what number is greater than when she gets to use her animals.  We have used  some of the animals to make foot prints in their play dough and even painted with them.  The uses for these animals just appear to be endless.

Lego.  There are lots of great posts on learning with Lego on Pinterest.  We have used our Lego with our Maths, making towers to represent our numbers is a great visual aid for the kids.  We have built towers and bridges for our trains and cars to drive through and as the kids are getting older so I can see more and more fun activities for our box of Lego.

Our  Stabilo Woody pencils  these are expensive but they have been a miracle worker with my little girl.  Pink has never enjoyed colouring in or writing, she battled with the pressure (part of her spd), but these pencils really helped her.  Only after we got her these did she really start enjoying colouring in and she used these for about a year to do all her handwriting lessons.  She now uses a range of different pencils but I have noticed that she does come back to these, especially on the days when she is feeling tired.  You can also use these as water-colour pencils by dipping them in water (both kids love this).

K.I.S.S.

I have been thinking a lot lately about something that one of my university lectures always said, K.I.S.S = Keep It Simple Stupid (he meant that nicely I am sure).  He would often write this on the board and his reason was that often the simple solution was the best solution.  I think this really applies in our homeschooling journey.  More often than not if I keep something simple the kids end up loving it and they will end up developing the idea themselves with their own imagination.  But here is the problem, I often get caught up trying to create the perfect project / activity for them to do and end up making it more complicated that necessary.

Why do I always think I need to have a perfect art project carefully planned when the kids love just having some paper and paint to create whatever they want.  And I am always trying to find interesting maths for Pink but really what she wants most of all is to be able to do the shopping with me, help me pay and handle the change (and now she also wants to write the shopping list – which is great for her spelling), she wants to bake with me and she wants the family to go to her pretend cafe and order food and pay at her till.  I sometimes think we get too caught up worried that the kids have not done enough, not learnt enough, instead of just letting them be kids and play, they learn so much by playing.

So my new note on my fridge door is going to be K.I.S.S. although I think I will change the last S to something else as I do not like using the word Stupid around the house EVER.  Sweetie or sunshine might be an option ?

Our Fav Shape activities

We have been having some fun with our shapes again lately.  I wanted to make sure Pink had a very good understanding of all the 2D shapes before we went onto our 3D shapes.  We started off by cutting out shapes in paper and then folded the shapes to see what other shapes we could make – this was great for seeing that if you fold a square in half you get a triangle.  Once we had finished with this the kids took their shapes and painted them all different colours.

One of our all time favourite activities is our TAP ART.  Both the kids love this.  Pink is very good at copying the pictures provided in the set and now also uses the shapes to create her own pictures.

We also used some felt that we had in the house to make some shape people (got the idea from the shape people in Mr Maker).  Blue really loved these.

Another great game that we have used a lot is Brainy Blocks.  In this you are given pictures and you have to use you shapes provided to complete the pictures.  Highly recommend this game.

And lastly we dug out some plastic shapes which I got on a toy clearance sale in South Africa.

Learning with the BBC Bitesize games

This winter has been wet and the kids and I have not gotten out as much as we usually do.  So I have been trying to find some different ways for them to do their learning when we are stuck inside and I found the BBC Bitesize games

If you have never heard of this before it is worth a visit.  For those who are not in the UK let me quickly explain, KS1 = Key Stage 1 and is the British Year 1 and Year 2, KS2 = Key Stage 2 is the British year 3,4,5 and 6. (Their Reception year forms part of what they call the foundation stage).

So Pink who is 5 is currently in Year 1 (ie KS1).  We  have tried a number of the games in the Literacy, Maths and Science sections.  For most of the games she has managed the Medium stage and the Hard stage (sometimes with some help) but for the most part we have not done the Very Hard games yet as they are too difficult for her.  Blue who is 3 tries to play with and does very well with the animal hospital game under science but for the most part he just moves the mouse and presses the buttons as big sister tells him.  I have however noticed that by just moving the mouse in the phonic game he is really starting to identify the sounds.

BBC Bitesize.

It would highly recommend having a visit.
