Playdough playdough !!!

We love our playdough.  We have used it in a number of fun ways – making animal footprints, forming letters, hiding beads and our latest craze has been making playdough cupcakes.

So now that we have 2 very large homeschooling bookcases our small white one was empty and looking rather sad so I thought we would use it to create a playdough area.

playdough

On the bottom I collected our tubs of playdough and our million cutters and shapes and goodies but I wanted to add something new for the kids.  I recently downloaded the Sharing a shell Platinum resource pack from Twinkl (we have not used it yet but it looks amasing) and in the pack there where some playdough mats.  So Monday night I cut and laminated them and added them to the middle shelf for the kids to discover.  Blue was the first to notice the mats and asked what he had to do.  So we got out our Sharing a Shell book and looked at the pictures in the book and pictures on the mat and spoke about what was missing.  Pink quickly thought this sounded interesting and joined us.  They both started off using the playdough to finish the pictures but then pink got her whiteboard markers out to add some extra details and Blue loved that idea.

playdough2So now our playdough mats are really playdough / white board marker mats.

The kids really enjoyed these mats so I did a quick search of Twinkl’s website and I found a bunch of great FREE playdough mats.  I have already bookmarked these three for later.

Mini Beast Playdough Mats

Transport Playdough Mats

Jungle and Rainforest Playdough Mats

They also have some great looking number playdough mats  and I found some doubling and halving playdough mats which I thought looked interesting but these ones are part of the gold package.  I have a feeling our playdough area is going to be around for some time.

Our Art Trolley

We do lots of arts and crafts and Pink will often sit quietly and create something with her paper and goodies (not always sure what she is creating) so I have been thinking about a way of keeping all the supplies together in an easy way for the kids to access them.  We have always just had an art shelf but I really wanted something that could move with the kids.  We have a tendency to do art all over our house – we use the kitchen table, the lounge floor, the kids blue tables in the lounge and we use the outside table in our garden.  So a trolley with wheels was the answer but I never saw the right one until I saw this amasing post at Tinkerlab.  Finally I knew which trolley to get so off to Ikea we went and now we have our very own art and craft trolley (the kids choose the blue colour, Ikea also have it in a cream and a dark gray).

art trolley

I stocked our trolley specifically for our kids and their ages (My 3.5 year old son would love to have a glitter rainstorm in our lounge so the glitter still remains on a top shelf where only I can reach it as does the poster paints).  I am sure the contents of the trolley will change over time but our first version is detailed below (for more ideas on what you could stock in the trolley head over to Tinkerlab )

The top shelf – these are our basic necessities

art trolley 2

  • pens / pencil crayons
  • dot markers
  • scissors and glue
  • lots of lolly sticks
  • paint brushes
  • wet wipes
  • some basic coloured stickers and googly eyes
  • toilet rolls – a craft necessity in our home

art trolley 4

  • some left over bits and bobs from old sensory tubs – this is to encourage those creations that Pink loves to make

The middle shelf

art trolley 3

  • pom poms / feathers / gems / anything which is great for collages
  • tissue paper
  • shredded paper
  • stencils
  • oil pastels (not enough space on the top shelf for these)
  • some water-colour paints (easy to clean up if need be)

The bottom shelf

  • white paper and coloured paper
  • white card
  • some colouring pages
  • some cutting pages that I have downloaded and printed
  • a basic white make your own card set (Pink loves making birthday cards for people)
  • a basic mosaic set (this has been added for Blue as he has to match the mosaics with the numbers on the pictures)
  • 2 re-useable white boards that the kids use to draw and write on (ours we bought at WH Smith in the UK about a year ago for just a few pounds each and they have been used a lot)
  • 2 clip boards
  • Oh and a last minute addition some empty egg cartons.

Let the creations begin !!!

Introduction to the Stone age

We stumbled across the Julia Donaldson book Cave Baby (affiliate link) in our local library and after reading it Pink started asking about living in a cave and how did they survive without a stove and car.  And yes we are suppose to be on our summer holiday but when with both the kids so interested …………………………

So I thought I would use this as a good excuse to look at some of the premium resources on the Twinkl website and see what they had for the Stone Age.  Their stone age resources are aimed at Key Stage 2 and as such a lot of them contained more detail than what we wanted at this stage but we did find a few gems to use (If you where looking at the stone age as part of Key Stage 2 I would recommend you have a look at what they have).  I personally liked the Stone Age Topic Teaching Facts and the Introduction to the Stone Age. (I always like to read up a bit about our topics first.)   We also liked the Prehistoric Beast poster, the Time line and the Stone Age Vocabulary Mat.  These are all great visual learning aids.  My kids are visual learners.  They like reading book, having posters to refer to or diagrams to look at but they also can get very distracted if there is too much on one page.  With all the Stone Age resources that we looked at there was enough to get their attention and get them to ask questions but not too much that they get distracted.  So big thumbs up in this area.  My daughter has actually just added the Stone Age Vocabulary Mat to her “learning board” above our kitchen table so she clearly likes it.

stone age 3Stone age 2

The Stone Age poster and the Timeline are printed on a number of A4 pages and then you have to cut and stick them together.  But with both of these I found it easy enough to line them up and once they were done I thought the end result was great.  So no complaint with that.

The biggest winner with my kids where the Stone Age cone people.  We cut and glued them together 4 days ago and they have been played with for hours every day since.

stone age 4

We made a cave out of an old box and the kids have been playing in the cave with the cone people.  I also gave them some stones, bits of bark and twigs to use in their cave and we decorated the cave with our very own cave paintings – the other big winner with my daughter.

I made some very simple cave painting stencils on card,

stone age 5

cut them out and then the kids used them to paint or colour in the pictures onto the walls of their cave.

stone age 6

I must mention that at 3.5 years old Blue did battle a bit with holding the stencils still while he painted and as a result his animals where a bit smudged but Pink managed perfectly.  After using paint for a bit Pink moved onto doing the stencils with her pencil crayons.

Stone age 7

Stone age 8

And I have been informed that we now need to paint the roof of our cave.

I have scanned in the pictures that I used for the stencils.  They are just hand drawn pictures but you are welcome to use them.

Cave Paintings

And lastly a little short story done by the BBC which my kids enjoyed.  It is a young boy telling us what it was like to live in the stone age.  It is not very young but my kids enjoyed watching it.

BBC Ancient Britain

Update – since writing this post my kids have also discovered a great Usborne book which they thought was very informative –  Who Were the First People (Usborne Starting Point History) (UK readers) and for US readers –  Who Were the First People? (Usborne Starting Point History)

And they became hooked on a series – Prehistoric Park [2006] [DVD].  I have actually written about this series in subsequent posts

Introducing the Stone Age with home-made cave, cave painting, cone people and much more

Baking cookies with kiddies

We love baking in our house, my kids run to the kitchen as soon as I ask if they want to bake.  We have some family favourite recipes that we make a lot but we also like trying new things.  There is a basic cookie recipe that Annabel Karmel uses in some of her books and which I have found in a couple of other places on the internet that just uses flour, egg yolk, caster sugar, butter and vanilla essence so I thought we would try it.  Here is the recipe – basic cookie recipe.

We made our mixture, rolled it in cling foil and left it in the fridge for 30 mins and then the real fun began.  We sprinkled flour on our kitchen table and the kids got to roll out the cookie dough and use cutters to make shapes.

I actually especially bought some alphabet cutters for them to use (but they turned out rubbish for little hands) so we ended up using some good old Tesco shape cookie cutters.  Both kids really enjoyed this and it is a really good activity for strengthening little hands.  And they made a lot.

After baking for around 20 minutes we got ours out let them cool and then stage 2 of the fun started again – we decorated them.  We used icing, sprinkles and some other treasures out of our kitchen cupboard.  Unfortunately this is when the memory card on my camera decided to die and corrupt my photos – very sad as there where some cute cookies – guess it just means we will have to do this again soon so I can take photos.

Yes we made a mess, I ended up covered in flour but both the kids had a blast and we got to do some important hand strengthening which is so important for writing.

Our favourite free resources from Twinkl

The last few weeks I have been trying to get a rough plan of what we are going to do in the next 12 months and get a few things printed out and sorted.  I have downloaded a bunch of the Twinkl free resources to use and I know that there are a bunch on their website that I have not even seen yet.  So I thought it might be a nice idea to do a post about some of our favourite Twinkl pages.  This is in no particular order and is in no way the complete list of their free downloads, but hopefully it will give you a taste of what they have to offer.
