We have these lovely number cards which Cassie from 3 Dinosaurs made for Free Homeschool Deals which we have used a lot with out snap cubes (if you are not sure what snap cubes are check out the link – we love ours).  I have often given the numbers cards to Pink and asked her to use her snap cubes to represent the number correctly.

But today Pink used the cards differently.  Her Ouma (gran) who is visiting set out the cards like the picture below (one card for a number bigger than ten and the ten card).

Pink then had to figure out what the missing number was (eg you have 15 and 10 the missing number is 5).

One Pink had figured that out she would get her snap cubes to show the numbers.

Very simple, but visual way of learning that what 10 plus x equals.  This really sunk in and after her bath Pink was actually repeating the sums to the family without using the cards.
