Learning with our Hopscotch foam mat

Last summer I bought the kids a foam hopscotch mat for the courtyard (very cheap from good old Tesco’s) but with the very wet winter we have had it has been packed away for a while so recently we dug it out.  The initial idea was to use it to help Blue recognise his numbers (he has taught himself to count to 20 just be listening to Pinks lessons but he did not know what the number looked like).  So we started off by getting him to jump on the number as we shouted it out or to put some of his toys on the number.  Pink naturally joined in only she did hers in Afrikaans (2nd language).

We also got out our little bean bags and made a game of both kids throwing the bean bags onto the number that I said.  This proved such great fun that the kids have been doing it for a few days now and we just keep changing the order of the numbers so that they have to think about what they are doing.

Then this morning while we where jumping on the numbers Pink started telling me which number was even and which was odd.  So we re-organised the mat again using all the numbers to 10 and started focusing our throwing on only even numbers or only odd numbers.  We also did this is Afrikaans so she could practice.

Number Cards

Both my kids love working with their number cards.  I have printed off a number of cards from the 3 Dinosaurs website and I have made some myself with some extra stickers lying around the house.  We use them with clothes pegs and with our dry wipe makers.

The cards in the two photos above are from the 3 Dinosaurs website.  If you go to her printable packs you can select which theme you want and print off the pages as needed.  We have used the ones from the Medieval pack and the Ocean pack. Blue loves joining in when Pink does her “school work” and this is great as he gets to do the numbers under 10 and Pink gets to do the bigger numbers.

We also have some subtraction number cards which we use out dry wipe markers on.  I got these from

Number lines

We have been using number lines a lot lately so I thought I would do a quick post on it.

We started off by using the number cards which I got from the apple pack I mentioned in my odd and even number post.  http://www.freehomeschooldeals.com/free-fall-apple-activities-printable-set/

I mixed up the numbers and pink have to create the number line on our lounge mat.

Once we had all the numbers out in a line I gave Pink her fairy wand and asked her to read all the Odd numbers for me and then the Even numbers, pointing out the numbers as she went.

We then grabbed whatever toys where close at hand and as I said the number she had to put the toy on the correct number, this was also a great activity for Blue to join in with.

Image

After that we started talking about which numbers are bigger and which are smaller.  We got out our snap cubes and placed them above the 2 numbers that we where comparing.

I love our snap cubes, they are a great visual aid when dealing with numbers.

This hands on maths fun tied in nicely with some of the worksheets that we have been doing lately using number lines to add and subtract.  I found this great pack for free from kindergartenpals1.blogspot.co.uk

Word Dominoes

One of the Christmas pressies this year was a box of dominoes and it has become one of the favourite games with both of the kids (Blue does need a little help but he generally gets it).  I remember seeing a word dominoes game on Pinterest a while ago and decided that I would try and make one for the kids.  Pink helped me with the cutting, ruling lines and writing out words (in our house we do not worry if something is not perfect as long as the kids are having fun).

We did these very quickly as Pink was desperate to play so we just used paper (it would be much better if you wrote them on card and laminated the cards).

Both Pink and Blue loved playing the word dominoes so much that I think I might make some more this weekend using some of the tricky words.

Home educating = deep breaths

I have only been homeschooling for around 18 months but what I have come to realize is that when you home educate it is often more about your children teaching you then you teaching your children.

Today was a good example.  Blue managed to get his porridge all over the nice clean lounge mat and while we where trying to bake some crunchies both kids managed to get most the mixture on the kitchen floor.  DEEP BREATHS!!!  Just one of those days when you wonder why are you doing this and then in the middle of the mess one of your kids turns to you and smiles and says “wow mom look at the steam coming out of the kettle that is the water melting just like the butter melted on the stove”.

I love worksheets and workbooks but in reality most of the learning happens not sitting at the desk but doing things.  It can be baking and learning about fractions and how ingredients melt and bake in the oven or dominoes and learning that a double 6 is 12.  It is learning through experience that sticks the most and so in the spirit of that I am going to sit down and have a crunchie, drink my cup of tea and pretend that my house is clean.
