Baking Sprinkle Biscuits with the kids

As soon as Pink woke up this morning she asked if we could bake, I had not planned on baking with her today but I remembered that I had pinned this fun looking biscuit recipe that used ingredients which I normally have in my cupboard (I have a small London kitchen so we can not keep lots of lovely ingredients on standby – unfortunately)

This is a simple biscuit where you roll the mixture in sprinkles / or what you have in your cupboard.

Pink really enjoyed making these biscuits, she did the measuring and most of the mixing – I had to help a bit as we just mixed with a wooden spoon (Pink does not like me using food mixers due to the noise they make and she is battling with noise at the moment so I did not want to push it).

After we had finished making the mixture and got the sprinkles out Blue joined in with the fun.

And then into the over and yummy yummy biscuits

Blues biscuits where HUGE.  But I try and make it a point when they bake to let them have fun and not worry about the smaller details like making a perfect round biscuit.

Making a flower book and other flower activities

Pink  has really gotten into her flower book that she is making.  As we see a new flower we read up a bit about the flower, print off a picture, she colours in the picture, sticks it in her book and writes a few words about it. This is really improving her writing and spelling.

We found these 2 great flower pages from the 2 Teaching Mommies website.  With both activities Pink had to cut out the shapes/ labels herself and paste them.

And we where thrilled when 3 Dinosaurs did their new flower learning pack.  This pack is huge and we have not done everything in the pack what we have done so far we have loved.  The biggest hit with Pink has been these 3 part cards which we printed off and laminated.  If you have never heard of 3 part cards it is a great way for the kids to learn the words.  I have found that doing these have really helped Pinks word recognition and I am amazed at how many flower names she now knows.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAShe also really liked the measuring a flower page and I could go on and on but just go and check out the pack, it is worth it.

And you can not do some flower activities without doing some flower art

Even Blue got involved and did a sunflower dot marker page.

Kids Learning Afrikaans

From the very first day of becoming parents we have tried to raise our kids in a bilingual home.  I am from an English speaking home and my husband is from an Afrikaans speaking home so we have tried the one parent one language rule in our house.  Both our kids are excellent translators but are naturally more at ease speaking English as that is what they hear the most and our homeschooling is in English.  So to try and improve the Afrikaans a bit we have introduced some homeschooling in Afrikaans.  This has mainly been some very basic worksheets done by me (not so easy finding Afrikaans books here in the UK). We do a lot of these where Pink draws a line linking the correct Afrikaans word with the correct English word or where she has to read the Afrikaans word and then write what it says (ie the correct number or colour the block in the correct colour).

I have also started using some of the blank packs which Cassie at 3 Dinosaurs has made.  We have been working on the Dishes pack.  I printed off the blank pack, wrote the Afrikaans words on the 3 part cards and laminated and cut them out.

These blank packs are great for a 2nd language, I have already started doing the animals from the blank zoo pack for the kids.

30 Days of Moving in April – Challenge by 3 Dinosaurs

3 Dinosaurs posted this challenge on their facebook page and I loved it because the challenge is that mom’s and dad’s do the 30 mins a day with their kids.  So no watching your kids dance/ jump on the trampoline, moms and dads have to do it with the kiddies.

We are going to be joining in, if you are keen take a look at the original post where 3 Dinosaurs give some great ideas of fun things to do with the kiddies.  30 days of moving post.

We got an early start on our challenge by playing our Quoits game, digging out our Tiger feet (bought from ELC here in the UK) and we had a blast.  The kids really do love it we join in.  So time to get moving !!!!  Kew Gardens and Richmond Park here we come.

Fun Transport Learning pack

Blue is a typical boy he is car / train/ plane mad.  He has been begging me for his own “school work” for ages and whenever Pink is doing some of hers he always tries to join in.  So the last few weeks I have been on the lookout for activities specifically for him, so I was thrilled when I found this transportation pack from Royal Baloo.

I printed off the shadow matching cards and Blue loved these.  After he finished matching the shadows he actually took the cards to play with.

We also printed off the number puzzles.  I did the 1 to 10 puzzle for Blue (he did need some help from Pink to complete it) and Pink who had by now joined in did the counting in 10″s puzzle.

I also laminated the pre-writing sheet for Blue so that he can do it while Pink does her writing.

This pack also included a what comes next page, which one is different, colour the car pages, colour the train by number and roll and graph pages, dot marker pages and so  much more. We will using these pages this coming week when Pink does her “school work”.

If you have a car, plane or train mad youngster in your house this is a great pack to use. I can highly recommend it.
